MIGHTY mare Winx has ended her racing career in style by taking out the Gr1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes over 2000m at Randwick. The win was her 33rd in a row, her 24th group 1 triumph and 37th victory in 43 starts.
The incredible finish also saw the departing champion equal Phar Lap’s astonishing 37-win record in a fitting send-off to a marvellous career on the track.
Winx settled towards the back of the field from her outside barrier under long-term jockey Hugh Bowman and left the sell-out crowd of 42,000 in awe as she took the lead at the start of the straight and powered away to win from Kluger and Hartnell.
Bowman said: “This horse has captured the hearts of a lot of people around the globe. There is really nothing more for me to say. I mean, she just showed you what she is capable of doing. I dare say if she had something else to catch, she had something else to catch, she had more to give. Maybe we will never know how good she really is.”
Trainer Chris Waller, who chalked up his 100th Gr1 winner, was so emotional he could hardly speak after the race. “I didn’t think of winning. I just tried to do y job. My team deserves the credit, I’m just a small cog in the wheel.”
Winx trotted around Royal Randwick one last time to a standing ovation as jockey Hugh Bowman saluted the appreciative crowd.
