FRIDAY is a watershed day for the Cape Thoroughbred Sales Company (CTS), who are staging its first Mare and Fillies For Stud Select Sale at Highlands Farm.

Never before, has South Africa hosted a Select Sale of fillies and mares – this one-day sale is set to start at 18:30 and will be immediately followed by the Cape Breeders’ annual stallion services auction.

This sale will give breeders the rare opportunity to buy mares and fillies for stud by some of the world’s very top stallions.

The likes of Arch, Darshaan, Fastnet Rock, Galileo, Giant’s Causeway, Green Desert, High Chaparral, Invincible Spirit, Rahy, Rainbow Quest, Rock Of Gibraltar, and the immortal Sadler’s Wells are some of the greatest stallions of recent times and all have played a major part in shaping the modern day thoroughbred.

Between them, these stallions are broodmare sire of more than 1030 stakes winners!

Major international stallions dominate the catalogue, but the majority of South Africa’s best sires are also well represented in this magnificent catalogue – with all of Al Mufti, Captain Al, Dynasty, Fort Wood, Jallad, Jet Master, National Assembly, Silvano, Trippi, Var and Western Winter represented by at least one daughter in this sale.

There are 11 individual stakes winners on sale, headed by the Grade One winners Imperious Star, Overarching and Zaitoon. This means no less than 15% of the fillies or mares catalogued are black type winners!

South Africa’s top and most exciting sires are numbered among the covering sires, with the likes of Ashaawes, Captain Al, Captain Of All, Dynasty, Duke Of Marmalade, Elusive Fort, Flower Alley, Gimmethegreenlight, Jackson, Master Of My Fate, Oratorio, Pathfork, Philanthropist, Pomodoro, Querari, Seventh Rock, Silvano, Time Thief, Twice Over, Vercingetorix, Visionaire, and Wylie Hall among sires with mares in foal.

The CTS team of Adrian Todd (MD) and Amanda Carey (Sales Manager), guests of Investec at Epsom last weekend, were among the first to pop champagne corks when Minding won the Investec Oaks in sensational fashion.

Elisium (GB) is a grey mare by Proclamation (IRE from Hiwaayati, the granddam of Lily Langtry who is the dam of Minding. Elisium will be sold in foal to Wilgerbosdrift’s promising stallion Flower Alley (Distorted Humor), who sired a Gr3 winner in the US a fortnight ago. With classic speed and stamina in Minding’s damline now proven beyond any doubt, Elisium will be worth her weight in gold.

Todd commented: “Blood like this coming into the South African breeding community can only bode well for our industry.”

Minding herself is by the phenomenal Galileo, the sire of 56 Gr1 winners around the world and considered by many to be the world’s best stallion. If Elisium is to be the cream at the CTS Sale, there are four Galileo cherries on top in the form of broodmares Exotic (Lot 7, in foal to Captain Al), Memorable (Lot 24, in foal to Querari), Cantabella (Lot 67, in foal to Captain Al) and Classical (Lot 70, in foal to Silvano).
