HSH Princess Charlene of Monaco touched down at Turffontein on Tuesday to do the draw for the two Maiden Plates which she is sponsoring.

The Royal Race Day takes place at Turffontein on Saturday and topping the meeting is the Grade 1 HSH Princess Charlene Empress Club Stakes for fillies and mares. This race, run over 1600m on the Standside course, carries prize money of R1 million.

However, the princess has always been a champion for the underdog and for that reason she is sponsoring two Maiden Plates at the meeting, one of them specifically for fillies and mares. Both races are over 1400m and each carries a stake of R250,000.

There were around 40 entries for each if the two races and that had to be cut down to 16. There are also four reserve runners in each event to replace any runner who might be scratched.

It was a “blind” draw and Princess Charlene just pulled out the 16 horses and it was interesting to see that many of the smaller trainers got the pick of the places.

However, in the race open to all maidens, Mike de Kock got three berths along with Stephen Moffatt. Punters who follow names and are looking for a topical winner will be supporting one of Moffatt’s runners: Mount Rainier.

Prior to Prince Albert becoming the head of the principality, it was his father, Prince Rainier, who held the reins until his death in April 2005.

Mount Rainier has run four times with his best performance coming over 1600m in his penultimate race, in which he ran a 0.80-length second behind Louis The Great.
