THE Sibaya KZN Yearling Sale is one of the most popular and fastest growing thoroughbred auctions on the South African calendar.
Over the past few years, despite facing a tough economic struggle, the KZN Yearling Sale has grown in both quality and quantity, with average and median prices by and large either rising or staying steady.
The sale, which takes place days before the running of South Africa’s greatest horse-race –the G1 Vodacom Durban July, has curved out a niche for itself in the South African market, as a sale which offers buyers both quality and great value for money, with stud farms around the country keen to support the KZN Yearling Sale.
Naturally, the KZN Sale has produced a number of outstanding performers, with its honour roll including Triple Crown/G1 Summer Cup winner Louis King, KZN champion Virgo’s Babe, G1 SA Derby hero Seal, subsequently exported dual G1 winner Same Jurisdiction (winner of the 2014 KZN Yearling Sale Million) and the tragically ill-fated Equus Champion, and G1 Gold Cup hero Wild One.
The latter, a bargain R95 000 buy from the 2011 sale, won or placed in 14 of his 19 outings before his premature death, with Wild One (South Africa’s Champion Stayer of 2014-2015) both winning and finishing second in the G1 eLan Property Group Gold Cup.
Last year’s sale also produced its share of talented performers, with graduates of the 2015 KZN Yearling Sale including devastating G3 Godolphin Barb Stakes winner Red Chesnut Road, as well as impressive debut winners Determination, Poster Girl and South Side. No doubt, a number of bright prospects will still emerge from the 2015 KZN Yearling Sale, with a number of well bred juveniles still unraced and waiting in the wings!
Graduates of the 2016 Sibaya KZN Yearling Sale qualify for the 2017 KZN Yearling Sale Million, which will be run next year on Vodacom Durban July day.
This year, 306 yearlings have been catalogued for the annual two-day sale, with a number of South Africa’s top farms and sires well represented.
