SYDNEY’s super mare, Winx, has rediscovered her authoritative best en route to recording her 20th consecutive victory in Saturday’s $500,000 Group 1 George Main Stakes over 1600m at Randwick.
Winx delivered two heart stoppers to start this campaign and there were a few nervous moments again before she claimed this latest scintillating success.
The world’s highest rated horse on turf has had to pull out all stops to win her first two races this preparation and she was under the pump at the 800m mark again on Saturday before she switched into another gear in the straight and stormed past her rivals to win by 1.75-lengths.
Now, Chris Waller’s magic six-year-old is moving ever closer to Black Caviar’s Australian record of 25 consecutive victories. There seems no stopping the great mare as she closes in on a third consecutive Cox Plate at Moonee Valley next month.
In winning, Winx equalled Sunline’s record of 13 Group 1 wins and became the first horse since Kingston Town (1981-82) to win successive George Main Stakes.
“She’s done it again, she’s such a delight to be a part of,” jockey Hugh Bowman said. “She’s such a magical horse. The pace was strong, at the top of the straight there was a lot of ground to make up. I knew she could do it today, I’m just so proud of her.”
