FORMER South African handicapper Bold Rex, who turned in three disappointing performances at Meydan in Dubai at his first Carnival last year, is expected to improve for Mike de Kock and partners at the second meeting of the 2019 Carnival tonight.

Bold Rex will be racing in the Cepsa Energy Cup over 1600m and De Kock reported: “Bold Rex is doing very well. He had three poor runs at last year’s Carnival, but you can draw a line through that, he is a different horse this year. We’ll be looking for a good run to start off, but he will come on with the run.” Olivier Deleuze takes the ride.

De Kock said of his other runners: “Faith and Fortune (Race 3) is twice an easy winner on dirt in Argentina, but the dirt tracks there are completely different the one at Meydan so we can’t draw a parallel. He’s a horse that hasn’t shown us much in work, he’s done what he’s had to do. The race will teach us more about him.

“Light The Lights (Race 5) ran a fair race after a rest on turf last week but will battle to be competitive on this surface off his 111 rating, so we’re switching him to dirt for the first time. We really can’t predict how he will go, this is entirely experimental.  His sire Western Winter was an exclusive sand horse and produced a few that performed on sand, but that’s about all we can go on.”

“Baroot (Race 7) is a game performer, but he takes a jump in class here and will improve with the run.”
